2:51 pm - Local 18c/Regency Dancing Events x 3!

jennil
Hello ladies!

Just wanted to cross-post some of the event plans we've been making via email so that other costumers in the area could potentially stumble on to them, and because, well, I love history, and wanted to continue the documenting of all our fabulous events. ;)

First of all, thanks to the mad planning skillz of [info]quincy134, we're all set for our holiday tea! I know it's going to be such a blast, and can't wait! :)

Being that I not only love costumes, but also love dancing, (especially Regency dancing, since it's more set dances and less couple dances, and so much more comfortable as far as dancing with strangers!) I wanted to share some info on two Regency and one 18c era dance events taking place in Massachusetts over the next few months, and see if anyone else is interested. . .

Sunday, December 13th:

I just got this one in the Elegant Arts email list. (If you're not on it, but interested in vintage dance, you should join it! I can forward the email on to whoever wants it). Not sure if I'll make it to this one, as I don't know where Rehobeth is, but I'm sure going to think about it - and look it up on MapQuest! ;)

Here is a copy/paste from of the information from the email:

Coming up very soon: on Sunday, December 13th, there will be a Regency era tea dance in Rehoboth (closer to Providence than Boston) in honor of Jane Austen's birthday. (That's actually the 16th, but the 13th is as close as we can get.) The dancing will primarily be country dances, but we'll also go the full range of Austen's lifetime and do a bit of quadrille or cotillion, the nine-person reel known as the Bumpkin, and maybe even that scandalous new waltz! Dances will be taught and steps briefly gone through but not dwelled heavily upon.

You can get an idea of the dance mix from the article, "What Did Jane Austen Dance?" here:
http://www.kickery.com/2009/11/what-did-jane-austen-dance.html

Suggested donation is $6. Music will be recorded. Light refreshments will be provided. Period costume of the early 19th century is admired but not required.

Friday, January 8th:

In 18c dancing possibilities. . . So far, I think it sounds like three of our little group are thinking of attending the annual 12th Nite Ball put on by the Sudbury Minutemen, which will be held on Friday, 1/8/10. Details can be found at the Sudbury Minutemen web site. I figure, folks who want to go can order their own tickets. . . Though, I noticed the made mention of dinner reservations being available separately. I assume this is for the restaurant at the Wayside Inn. If folks are interested in attending this event, and/or in additionally having dinner ahead of time, speak up, so we can work out making reservations.

Saturday, February 21st:

The other Regency dance event is one of the annual "Mostly Victorian Tea Dance" series. I've been to one of the tea dances in the past, and found it to be very casual - not many folks in costume - but we could certainly change that! ;) And, I noticed this year, these dances have live music, which is fun!

More info on this event (and the rest of the series) can be found on the Commonwealth Vintage Dancers web site.

Also, since I'll be in Cambridge for the dance, I was thinking I might finally try out this fabulous-looking chocolate shop I have often passed in Harvard Square. Only, I couldn't remember what it was called, but I went hunting, and think this might be it. What better to have so near to Valentine's day than a chocolate treat, no? ;) So anyone who wants to join me is most welcome!

9:21 am - Regency Picnic and Tour of Gore Place!

quincy134
Because of scheduling issues, we weren't able to have our regency picnic during the official "summer months" of June, July, and August. However, now that September is upon us, we have decided to give a regency event another try! Please join us!

What: A chance to visit Gore Place, an 1806 historic home in Waltham, MA. There are Jane Austen themed tours offered for the house. We will meet for a picnic beforehand on the grounds (weather permitting). The grounds are free to enter, while the tour costs $12 per person.
When: Afternoon of September 12, 2009. (The time will be firmed up when we make the tour reservation. Tours are offered at 1 PM and 3 PM.)
Where: 52 Gore Street, Waltham, MA.
What to wear: 1795-1825 outfits (we're widening the time-frame to make it easier for people, as this is short notice).
What to bring: A picnic lunch and a picnic blanket. We can coordinate details when the time gets closer, and we see the weather forcast.
RSVP: By commenting here. Please let me know by Monday September 7th if you plan to attend, because I have to make tour reservations.

As of 9/1/09: We've got 5 people confirmed!

2:50 pm - Care to picnic with me, anyone?

jennil
I'm making one last attempt here at organizing the "annual picnic" for my local Regency fans. . .

The prospective date I have in mind is Saturday, August 9th, or Sunday, August 10th. Would that work for anyone else? I know I don't have a prayer at finding a date that would work for all, so I'm just trying to pick the one that works for most. . .

10:32 am - Let's try this "save the date" thing again!

jennil
So, change in plans. The fabulous [info]quincy134 is getting married that weekend, and we can not picnic without her! It turns out Glenn also had some secret plans going on for us that weekend. . . So, Allow me to propose some other dates here, and see if we can get one that works for everyone. . .

How about Saturday, 7/19? I figure, 7/5 is out (4th of July weekend - most folks have other events going on) and I have ruled out 7/12 as well because it's the day of the Nahant ball, and I think me and my TomTom are going to have an adventure and try to attend that one! (Side note: Anyone interested in going to that? I think it's set to be 1860s this year, but this one has a costume optional theme, and folks show up in other eras and/or modern dress. . .)

7/26 doesn't seem to have big conflicts except that it's the last weekend before Costume College, so I'd kind of prefer to not try and host a picnic since I'm usually busy sewing, doing laundry, packing, doing hair test runs, etc! But, if it's the only date that works for folks, of course I'd go for it!

And as for June. . . June 21st is open for me, and perhaps June 14th though I worry with going too early in June because the chances of it pouring rain get greater!

Okay, so do any of these dates work for folks?

3:59 pm - Save the date!

jennil
Spring is in the air! It's getting warmer, the trees are getting green, (and in some cases, white, and even pink! Yay that!) and you know what that means? It's almost picnic season!

The fourth annual "Attempt At A Regency Picnic" is set to take place on Saturday, June 28th. I really hope this date can work for everyone! Please post a comment if you are thinking of going!

More details to be announced over the next few weeks. . .

5:05 pm - 4th time's a charm?

jennil
There may still be snow on the ground, and it's still freezing cold outside, but I officially have spring fever! So, in addition to starting spring cleaning and continually trying to leave my house in a sweater instead of my winter coat, I've begun daydreaming about frolicking around in Regency attire this summer. So, I want to officially announce that I will be planning - er, attempting to plan - the Fourth Annual Regency Almost-A-Picnic!

It will take place, as usual, in June or July (exact date tbd - and don't worry, I will touch base with everyone interested in attending and try to find the perfect date that suits everyone) on the south shore of Massachusetts. I'm still planning out all the details, but have some really fun ideas. I'll work it out and post more at a later date, but I wanted to be sure and get the official word out so you all have plenty of time to plan and make a Regency "something" to wear.

Please join me! It was fun getting to play "model" last year and have Glenn taking fun pictures of me in costume, but it would have been more effective as a "picnic" if there were some picnicers! ;)

1:28 pm - Becoming Jane

quincy134
Becoming Jane, a movie loosely based on the life of Jane Austen, is coming out in the US in early August. I was thinking, especially since [info]jennil's picnic fell through (through no fault of her own, mind!), Boston-area folks could try to make this movie into a regency costume event. Both [info]jennil and I are busy in early August, but perhaps a weekend closer to September? We could pick a theater close to the T (Harvard Square, Kendall, Cleveland Circle, and Boston Common are all pretty T-accessible) and go get some tea before or afterwards (or do something else, if anybody has any suggestions).

x-posted on my personal lj.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Regency Picnic is cancelled. Sorry for the short notice! But the list of attendees got down to two, including myself, so it seemed silly.

1:30 pm - 6/23: Regency Picnic!

jennil
Hello all!

I just sent an email to anyone who gave me an email address for local "events" (and then some!) but also wanted to post a quick next-to-last-minute reminder here to let you all know, we're on for the Regency Picnic this Saturday, June 23rd, at the Brewster Gardens in Plymouth MA. Provided it doesn't rain - but the weather report looks good! Only a 10% chance of rain, and I can certainly brave that! :)

The picnic starts at noon, but I will be touring the "Spooner House" museum, which is just a few minutes (walking) from the Brewster Gardens, prior to the picnic. If you would like to join me, please let me know! Either post here or email me (jenniloves2sew (at) yahoo (dot) com) so I can arrange a group tour if necessary. The cost for the tour is $4.50 per person, and tentatively we will meet at the Spooner House at 11:30.

If you just want to attend the picnic, no RSVP is necessary, just turn up at noon-ish at the Brewster Gardens!

For more info on the picnic, please visit the picnic page on my web site!

I really hope you will join us! :)

jennil
Saturday, June 23rd, 2007:

3rd Annual (Rained Out) Regency Picnic! Be there or be square. And by square, I mean, without costume. ;P Come on, there are two months (almost exactly!) from now until then. . . You know you want to! *evil grin* ;)

8:34 pm - Boston (it seems like this is 1st chronologically)

ms_arabellablue
It would be nice if Victorian/Boston was sometime at the very end of Sept. (beginning Oct.?), cause not all of us have bustle dresses (seesh!) ;)
We should probably pick a date soon, so I know way in advance when I need to be finished.
Then there's: picking meeting spot (close to parking?)
rough-sketching where we'll be walking (I'm thinking Comm. Ave-Public Gardens!!!-Beacon Hill, because they're all connected)

Do we want to visit a museum? historic house? capitol building? (oh, I like that! it's right on the park, it's v. pretty, and photos are okay) food/tea? or just keep it simple?

as for narrowing down the time period, I'd be okay with that, I'd even be in favor of it. My vote goes for 1880s.

So. . . Just wanted to touch base one more time regarding the "Strolling in Newport" this Saturday. . .

The plan as to where to meet and at what time remains the same: 10 am at The Elms. For those of you who don't know, the annual "Newport Vintage Dance Week" is currently taking place at the mansions, and Saturday is their last day. Some of the NVDW attendees are also planning to attend the coaching demonstration and tour The Elms. This means two things: First - more costumers! Yay! ;) Secondly - meeting up may prove to be a bit of a challenge, since I can't just say "find the girl in costume." ;P So, here is a picture of me in the dress I'll be wearing on Saturday, so you know who to look for:

I have heard that the coaching demonstration is probably going to be ridiculously packed, so if by chance it's impossible to find one another, head to the gateway of The Elms directly after, and I will linger there a bit to try and make sure nobody gets left out of the fun.

Please note: You are on your own as far as purchasing tickets - I will not be purchasing tickets for the group.
We simply didn't have enough definite "yes" responses to be able to get a group rate, and so we will each need to take care of our own tickets. The coaching demonstration is free, but touring the mansions is not. We will be touring "The Elms" and then "The Breakers," and if those are the only mansions you plan to tour, then I recommend the package called "The Breakers Plus," which allows admittance to The Breakers and one other property, and is $22. If you plan to visit more than these two mansions, there are other packages that may be a better fit for you, so you may want to read about that on the Newport Mansions web site. If you plan visit the mansions frequently, there are also assorted membership options to look into. Tickets can be purchased online or in person at the mansions. If you want to read about/purchase tickets online, here is the address for the Newport Mansions web site:

http://tickets.newportmansions.org/

I have checked the weather and as of this morning, it's still predicting a warm and sunny Saturday. Yay! But please remember to use sunscreen and/or bring a parasol, because the lines to get into the mansions can be quite long, and if memory serves, this can involve standing in direct sunlight for a somewhat lengthy time.

And of course, don't forget your camera! ;)

6:58 pm - Will you be strolling in Newport with us?

jennil
Well, the Newport plans are made and posted! You can see them here. The basic info:

- Saturday, August 19th

- Meeting at 10 am at The Elms for the coaching demonstration, following which we will tour The Elms and then The Breakers.

- Costumes from the 1870s-80s preferred, but anything from post-CW-hoops through 1910s is fine too. Guys can just wear "nice" clothing, because let's face it, it's hard enough to drag them along without asking them to wear costumes too. ;P

Yay! :)

So what are you doing on Saturday, 6/10?

What's that you say? Sitting around pouting because you have nothing fun and costumey to do, and looking at your Regency attire longingly thinking, gee, I really wish there was a Regency event in good old Massachusetts. . .

Well guess what? You're in luck! The lovely [info]sarahlizzi and myself are hosting a Regency picnic at the Plymouth water front on that exact date! ;)
